The Kindness of Strangers: The Way a Gentleman I Had Just Met Assisted Me Land the Role That Transformed My Existence

During the final years of the 1980s, I set out on a low-cost journey to Europe with a travel partner. Since my friend was exploring pursuing a master’s degree in the Big Apple, we had booked a two-week stay there before heading to London.

We reached the graduate housing, a sizeable 10-storey building on the Manhattan's Upper West Side known as International House. Setting down our luggage, we went directly to the cafeteria, where we got some food, took a seat, and started talking to people eating there.

Sitting next to me was an individual of Iraqi origin pursuing an engineering degree at a prestigious New York university. He inquired what I did, and I told him that I had newly finished with a degree in science and had been working on studies with electron microscopy.

He pointed out that there was an research lab at the institution – close to the school of engineering, which was why he was aware of it. He suggested that I consider applying for a role with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, telling him that I was soon departing to Europe and, even more importantly, I did not possess a US visa.

A day later I toured the city, coming back to the dining hall that after dark. The Iraqi student walked over to me and let me know that he had set up a meeting for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Given that he had gone to the trouble, I attended the interview – but right away informed my prospective employer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

As is common in NYC – a city where everything seems achievable – she responded: “That can be arranged. How soon can you begin?” I never got on that flight to London.

I worked there for three years. One of the benefits was that I got free tuition at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to earn a master’s of international affairs.

We didn't cross paths after that and I don’t even know his full name, but his selfless gesture transformed my future in so many ways. I didn't possess the bravery or self-belief to reach out at an prestigious college and seek a position. And, I had consistently hoped to take classes in another country, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that tuition waiver.

What's more, that role at the university resulted in a role in Europe where I encountered my wonderful partner, with whom I now have a family of four kids. That encounter altered everything. That helpful person changed my trajectory in life, and I’m forever grateful.
